BTG: An Injury Becomes An Opportunity 🩼
My Dear Storybuff:
“What you focus on determines what you miss.” Micaiah Johnson's words in their hit Sci-Fi book, Those Beyond the Wall, lingered after I read them. It was a reminder that specific focus and peripheral awareness share a both-and rather than an either-or dynamic. And it was a snapshot in my 2025 scrapbook. Let me rewind a little...
The end of spring 2025 brought the start of summer 2025. While the seasons were transitioning, I was feeling stuck. At first glance, it would be easy to think that the boot on my right foot was the culprit. But the fracture it was rehabilitating was the obstacle.
“The obstacle is the way” is a saying charismatic speakers often offer as a buffer against misfortune. But my brain was preoccupied with keeping various doctor’s appointments, leave of absence paperwork, and medical claim procedures straight. My body was busy getting accustomed to the level of immobility healing required. And my soul was in the throes of juggling all the emotions that bubble up when life goes a little downhill.

So, there was some sulking. About two weeks where I hobbled a little and sat a lot wondering, "Well, what do I do now?" Sure, it was appropriate to focus on my foot injury that kept me from work and my regular routine. But it was also refreshing when I sat back to take the entirety of my situation in. Then I could appreciate what I was missing. My foot was gridlocked. But my pen was nimble. My mobility was limited. But my imagination was free as a bird. I had to take a leave of absence from work. But I was all the more present to write.
The setback became an opportunity. An opportunity I didn't want to miss. So, I treated my foot injury like a paid writing residency from home. And I made progress on writing projects that I wouldn't have made otherwise. This website is one of several achievements because of it. So, as we sit in the middle of 2026 I wonder—What challenge have you been so preoccupied with that you may be missing an opportunity right in front of you?
Well, that's my story morning glory. Keep living out yours. And remember…Stories tell us.
